What will "Pepe" Mujica's funeral procession look like? A farewell filled with symbolism and memory.

José Mujica

Uruguay is preparing for an emotional farewell to José "Pepe" Mujica , the former president whose austere life and commitment to social justice resonated around the world. The country joins in a tribute that celebrates not only a political leader, but a symbol of humility, resilience, and conviction.

Following the announcement of his death, the government and the Frente Amplio organized a series of events to allow the Uruguayan people to pay tribute to the man who served as president from 2010 to 2015, and much more than that: a beacon of hope for the most vulnerable.

The funeral procession, scheduled for 10 a.m. today, will depart from the Executive Tower, the presidential headquarters, in Independence Square. The tour through the streets of Montevideo will be a journey through Mujica's personal and political history, connecting key places that shaped his life.

The itinerary is a visual narrative of his career. From the Executive Tower, the procession will head down 18 de Julio Avenue to the headquarters of the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement (MLN-T) on Tristán Narvaja Street. This location evokes his past as a guerrilla, his fight against the dictatorship, and the years of imprisonment that shaped his character.

The procession will continue to the headquarters of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) on Mercedes Street, a group founded after the return to democracy that became a vital force within the Broad Front. The procession will then pass by the Broad Front headquarters and finally head down Libertador Avenue toward the Legislative Palace.

Starting at noon, the doors of the Hall of Lost Steps in the Legislative Palace, a space reserved for the most solemn state tributes, will open for the wake. Starting at 3:00 p.m., the public will be able to pay their respects, following a procession that will allow them to bid farewell to Mujica.

Andrea Barreto , Director of Protocol for the Legislative Branch, assured that the doors will remain open throughout the night to accommodate all those who wish to pay their respects. The wake is expected to extend until noon on Thursday, May 15, in anticipation of the arrival of heads of state and international authorities who have confirmed their attendance. His remains will then be cremated at the Martinelli company, according to sources close to the family.

The Uruguayan government has declared a national mourning period until Friday, May 16. Flags will be flown at half-staff on all public buildings, a symbol of mourning and a tribute to a man who transcended political boundaries and won the hearts of his people.

Even his adversaries recognize his worth. Former President Julio María Sanguinetti , who had marked ideological differences with Mujica, highlighted the evolution of their relationship: "We had times of confrontation, but in recent years we have known how to sow harmony and tolerance," reflecting the respect Mujica inspired across the political spectrum.

This farewell to José "Pepe" Mujica is more than a funeral; it is a celebration of a life dedicated to the fight for justice, equality, and human dignity. It is a moment to reflect on his legacy and reaffirm our commitment to the values that guided him.
